In the summer of 2019, 23-year-old Muhammad Azuan Iqbal Abdullah Sani from Shah Alam, Malaysia, lived like many young people his age—constantly glued to his smartphone for games and social media.

What started as a minor inconvenience turned into a life-altering medical emergency when he ignored a cracked screen protector on his device.

For four long months, Azuan played mobile games obsessively on his phone, his right thumb repeatedly swiping and tapping across the shattered glass surface.

He never bothered to replace the damaged protector, assuming the tiny cracks posed no real threat beyond aesthetics.

One day, about three weeks before seeking serious help, Azuan noticed unusual swelling and small black spots appearing on his right thumb.

At first, he dismissed the symptoms as a simple irritation from excessive phone use or perhaps a minor cut.

Concerned but not alarmed, he visited a local doctor who diagnosed a bacterial infection. Antibiotics and painkillers were prescribed, yet the swelling refused to subside and the pain only intensified over the following days.

Desperate for relief, Azuan checked himself into a private hospital in Shah Alam.

There, doctors discovered the true culprit: microscopic glass shards from the cracked screen protector had embedded themselves deep into his thumb without him ever feeling a direct cut.

Surgery became necessary to extract the embedded fragments and remove infected tissue.

The procedure was delicate, aimed at saving the digit that medical staff warned could require amputation if treatment had been delayed any longer.

Azuan later recounted the shock of learning how close he came to losing his thumb permanently.

“It was shocking to know that my finger would have to be amputated if I had delayed treatment,” he told local media, reflecting on the ordeal.

His brother shared graphic photos of the mangled thumb on social media, sparking widespread attention and over 14,000 reactions online.

The images served as a stark visual warning about everyday phone habits many take for granted.

Fortunately, the surgery succeeded, and Azuan was discharged with instructions for weekly wound cleaning.

He recovered fully but carried a permanent reminder of the risks hidden in overlooked device damage.

Today, Azuan urges everyone to replace cracked screen protectors immediately.

His story highlights how something as simple as ignoring phone maintenance can lead to severe health consequences, reminding users worldwide that convenience should never trump safety.
