In a remarkable display of medical ingenuity, 31-year-old Kyle Mazur from Pennsylvania had his severely injured hand temporarily sewn to his hip to save it following a horrific workplace accident.
The factory operator was working at a boxing plant when his left hand was pulled into a powerful machine on February 2, 2022.
The incident resulted in a full degloving injury, where all the skin was ripped from his hand and wrist.
Rushed to the hospital, Mazur faced a grim prognosis.
Surgeons determined that immediate reattachment wasn’t viable due to the extensive damage to skin and tissue, leaving them with innovative options to preserve the limb.
Doctors, led by skilled professionals including Dr. Lin, opted for a rare procedure known as a groin flap.
This involved surgically attaching the damaged hand inside Mazur’s hip area to allow new blood vessels and skin to develop from the body’s own tissue.

After being presented with choices, including amputation or experimental toe-to-hand transfers, he chose the groin flap to preserve as much function as possible.
For six long weeks, Mazur’s hand remained sewn to his hip.

The attachment allowed critical blood flow to nourish the hand while skin grafts took hold.
Mazur endured significant discomfort but remained determined, focusing on the goal of regaining use of his dominant hand.
Once sufficient healing occurred, surgeons carefully detached the hand from the hip.
This was followed by over 16 operations, including additional skin grafts, nerve repairs, and extensive physiotherapy to restore movement.
Today, Mazur lives with a three-fingered left hand after losing his thumb and pinky.
Despite chronic pain and nerve damage, he has adapted remarkably well with the help of special assistive devices.
