In November 2009, the quiet community of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was shaken by the mysterious disappearance of 25-year-old Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada. His case would remain unsolved for nearly a decade, captivating the public with its eerie twists.

On the evening of November 28, Larry fled his parents’ home barefoot into a raging blizzard, dressed only in a hoodie and light blue pants. He had been agitated, possibly due to recently starting a new regimen of antidepressants that triggered hallucinations.

Family members reported him missing immediately. Despite extensive searches by police and volunteers, no trace of Larry was found, leaving his loved ones in anguish for nearly a decade.

Larry had been employed at the nearby No Frills Supermarket, located less than a mile from his residence. This connection would later prove tragically significant.

The supermarket featured large commercial refrigerator units in a back storage room, not accessible to the public. Employees frequently climbed atop these 12-foot-high coolers for unofficial breaks or to store items.

Investigators theorize that after leaving home, Larry entered the store and scaled the top of the refrigeration units.

In a fatal misstep, he fell sideways into the narrow 18-inch gap between the back of the coolers and the wall, plummeting to the bottom where he became hopelessly trapped.

The deafening noise from the constantly running compressors likely drowned out any cries for help, and the hidden location ensured no one noticed his predicament.

Astonishingly, the No Frills Supermarket continued operating normally until its closure in 2016. For years, shoppers and staff were unknowingly mere inches away from Larry’s decomposing remains.

In January 2019, contractors dismantling the old equipment made a gruesome discovery: human remains wedged in the gap. DNA testing in July confirmed the identity as Larry Murillo-Moncada.

An autopsy revealed no signs of trauma, ruling the death accidental. This bizarre case underscores the fragility of life and how the most familiar places can harbor unimaginable secrets.
