On January 12, 1998, what began as a standard workday in Reykjavík turned into a nightmare. Felix was dispatched to repair a faulty overhead power cable in freezing conditions, with temperatures dipping to -11°C.
Due to a fatal miscommunication among the crew regarding which lines were energized, Felix ascended a wooden utility pole and grasped what he thought was a de-energized wire.
Suddenly, 11,000 volts and 100 amperes of electricity ripped through his arms. The intense current caused severe burns, igniting his limbs in flames as the surge overwhelmed his body.

The powerful shock propelled him approximately 10 meters to the icy ground below. He sustained breaks in his back in three places and fractured his neck, yet remarkably stayed conscious throughout the ordeal.
Fortunately landing near a river, his colleagues hurriedly filled their helmets with water to extinguish the fire engulfing his arms. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital in critical condition.
Doctors determined his arms were irreparably damaged by the electrical burns and subsequent tissue death. To save his life, they performed double arm amputations, initially above the elbows, with further revisions due to infections.
Felix slipped into a medically induced coma that lasted three months. His body endured the first of what would total 54 surgeries in the following year to combat infections and stabilize his injuries.
