North Texas authorities have arrested 31-year-old Kaitlyn Rose Laura of Glen Rose for what officials describe as a horrific case of medical child abuse involving her 3-year-old son.
The mother is accused of fabricating serious illnesses to subject the perfectly healthy toddler to invasive medical procedures.
Laura was taken into custody by the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office on March 19 and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony, as well as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
An 18-page arrest affidavit details a pattern of deception spanning months.
According to investigators, Laura repeatedly told doctors that her son had conditions including cerebral palsy, making him unable to walk, and other ailments like autism.
In reality, the child had no such disabilities and was capable of normal physical activity.
The allegations include forcing the boy to use a wheelchair despite his ability to walk independently.
Laura allegedly convinced medical professionals to perform surgery for the insertion of a feeding tube, claiming the child had severe eating problems that did not exist.
Court records indicate the young boy was prescribed up to 17 different medications at one point, many of which were unnecessary and potentially harmful.
He was also subjected to other unneeded treatments based on his mother’s false reports.
Laura is accused of misleading not only healthcare providers but also the public.
She created online fundraising campaigns and shared stories on social media portraying her son as critically ill, soliciting donations from well-meaning supporters.
The case came to the attention of Child Protective Services in February when concerns were raised at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
The child was removed from Laura’s care on Valentine’s Day, triggering a full investigation by authorities.
Now placed in foster care, the 3-year-old is reported to be thriving.
He has begun eating normally on his own and is being successfully weaned off the array of medications that were prescribed due to his mother’s actions.
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn called the alleged abuse a ‘sickening’ and ‘horrific crime.’
Officials emphasize the importance of vigilance in cases where caregivers may be fabricating symptoms in children.
Following her initial arrest, Laura was released on a $75,000 bond but reportedly faced a subsequent arrest in April for allegedly violating bond conditions, which prohibited contact with her son and other children.
This case sheds light on the rare but devastating phenomenon known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, or medical child abuse.
It underscores the need for better safeguards in the medical system to protect vulnerable children from such exploitation while the legal proceedings against Laura continue.
