In an astonishing medical case that has captured international attention, 92-year-old Estela Melendez of Chile has discovered a secret she carried within her body for nearly half a century.
The revelation came after the elderly woman suffered a fall at her home and was rushed to a local hospital for routine X-rays.
Physicians examining the images were shocked to identify a calcified fetus lodged in her womb, a condition she had lived with unknowingly since her younger years.
Melendez recalled that more than 50 years ago, doctors had informed her of a mysterious lump in her abdomen, diagnosing it as a tumor that might require surgery, which she ultimately avoided.
Unbeknownst to her, the mass was actually the remains of a fetus that had stopped developing during a pregnancy decades earlier.
Known medically as a lithopedion or “stone baby,” this rare phenomenon happens when a fetus dies in the uterus and the mother’s body begins to calcify the tissue to prevent infection and complications.
In Melendez’s case, the fetus had grown to about four and a half pounds before calcifying, forming a hard, bony structure that caused her no major discomfort over the years.
The discovery also provided an explanation for why Melendez and her late husband were never able to have children despite years of trying.
Family members, including her son Luis, expressed amazement at the news, noting how the condition had remained hidden for so long.
Medical professionals describe lithopedion cases as extremely uncommon, with fewer than 300 reported worldwide throughout history.
Given her advanced age, doctors opted not to perform surgery to remove the calcified fetus, determining that the risks outweighed any potential benefits, allowing Melendez to live out her days in peace with her newfound knowledge.
