Before the red carpets and blockbuster films, Mark Ruffalo’s life was far from glamorous. In the late 1990s, the aspiring actor found himself living in a converted garage in Los Angeles, chasing dreams with limited resources.
With no car and no credit card to his name, Ruffalo’s days were filled with audition after audition. He barely made ends meet, yet his determination to succeed in acting never wavered.
It was amid these humble circumstances that fate intervened. In 1998, while walking the streets of Los Angeles, Ruffalo met Sunrise Coigney through a mutual acquaintance.
Sunrise, also involved in the arts, looked past the garage living and financial struggles. She saw the passion and talent in Mark that others overlooked.
“I was living in a garage, and she was the one who said, I know you’re an actor, and I know you’re going to be great,” Ruffalo has recalled.

However, joy was tempered by challenge when, in 2001, shortly after the birth of their first child, Mark discovered he had a benign brain tumor.
He waited to tell Sunrise until after the delivery.
Her initial shock turned to tears, but she remained steadfast, supporting him through surgery and the difficult recovery period that affected his face and hearing.
Sunrise’s loyalty during his illness, when many might have walked away, solidified their partnership.
She didn’t abandon him even as he faced temporary facial paralysis and permanent hearing loss.
