That evening, after spending time with friends, Hannah offered her friend Cheslin Marsh a ride home in her blue and white Volkswagen Citi Golf. Little did they know that their lives were about to be shattered by a brutal gang of criminals.
As the pair sat in the car outside Marsh’s student residence around 6 AM, four men ambushed them at knifepoint. Armed with weapons including a sharpened screwdriver, the gang forced their way into the vehicle, beginning a night of terror.

The perpetrators—Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons, Eben van Niekerk, and Nashville Julius—robbed the students and drove off with them. Cheslin Marsh was beaten severely and locked in the trunk of the car while Hannah was held in the front.
The gang attempted to withdraw money using Marsh’s bank card at a petrol station but failed due to the wrong PIN. They then proceeded to a remote location where they viciously assaulted Marsh with bricks and rocks, leaving him for dead. Miraculously, he survived.
Hannah’s ordeal continued as the men took her to various locations, including a drug den where she was forced to consume drugs, and then to an isolated paintball park. There, she endured hours of repeated gang rape and sodomy by the four men and possibly another.
Forensic evidence later revealed the extent of the brutality: significant genital injuries, used condoms, DNA evidence, and signs of her desperate resistance with skin under her fingernails. The attackers were high on crystal meth and cannabis.

Near dawn, the gang drove Hannah to a vineyard road on Knorhoek farm. When she resisted further assault, they stabbed her in the neck, beat her, and crushed her skull with a massive 37.5 kg rock, killing her almost instantly.
After murdering Hannah, the men continued their crime spree, robbing and kidnapping two other women in Kraaifontein before being apprehended by police in a high-speed chase in Hannah’s stolen car.

In 2018, the Cape Town High Court convicted all four. Three received life sentences for rape and murder, while the fourth was sentenced for kidnapping and robbery. The total sentences amounted to 358 years.
The case sent shockwaves through South Africa, highlighting issues of violent crime. Hannah’s family faced further tragedy with her mother’s death a year later and father’s passing in 2022. They established the Hannah Cornelius Foundation to support education and combat violence. Her memory lives on as a call for justice and safety.
