In October 2015, 21-year-old Dutch medical student Sophia Koetsier embarked on what should have been the adventure of a lifetime in Uganda.
A bright, compassionate young woman from Amsterdam, she had just completed an eight-week internship at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala, drawn by her passion for tropical medicine.
Sophia’s journey to Africa was fueled by curiosity and a desire to help others.
After her internship, she joined two Dutch friends and a local tour guide for a two-week safari, eager to experience the continent’s breathtaking landscapes and wildlife.
On the sixth day of their trip, the group arrived at Murchison Falls National Park, a vast reserve famous for its dramatic Nile River cascades, rolling savannas, and abundant animals.
They settled at the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s student center in Paraa, a simple cluster of cabins near the river.
As evening fell on October 28, Sophia mentioned she was heading to the nearby bathroom.
A witness saw her around 6:30 p.m. near the latrine hut, holding an empty mineral water bottle she had used to collect trash, gazing toward the Nile.
When she failed to return, her companions alerted park rangers.
An immediate search began in the gathering darkness, but the dense vegetation and rugged terrain made progress difficult.
The next morning, searchers found a trail of Sophia’s belongings scattered along a 50-yard stretch on the north bank of the Nile, about 600 yards from the camp.
Items included her sunglasses, a half-torn banknote, one boot, the sole of another, and an empty souvenir purse.
Even more unsettling were fragments of her clothing tied to branches and her underwear hanging several meters high in a tree.
Some accounts noted the shoes appeared clean and dry, raising questions about how they ended up there.
Extensive searches followed, involving Ugandan rangers, boats, helicopters, divers, and later Dutch police with drones.
Despite combing the river and surrounding jungle, no trace of Sophia’s body was ever recovered.
Theories ranged from a tragic accident—perhaps an animal attack by hippos or crocodiles common in the area, or drowning in the strong currents—to foul play.
Later analyses reportedly found unknown male DNA on some garments, and the oddly arranged items fueled suspicions of staging.
Sophia’s family has never accepted the initial official narrative of a simple mishap.
They have made multiple trips to Uganda, offered rewards for information, and maintained the website findsophia.org to keep her case alive more than a decade later.
Today, the disappearance of Sophia Koetsier remains one of Uganda’s most haunting unsolved mysteries.
